Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an emotional/mental disorder that results from a person being exposed to a terrifying traumatic event, such as a car accident, sexual assault, or another such event. The exposure can be either as an actual participant or as a witness. The consequences can be very serious, debilitating, and long lasting. The symptoms include “reliving” the traumatic events with recurring thoughts (flashbacks) or nightmares, excessive response to external reminders, negative changes in mood (anxiety).
The American Academy of Family Practice estimates that 8% of men and 20% of women who are exposed to traumatic events suffer from PTSD.
The Rand Institute estimates that approximately 1/5th of US military troop will have experienced PTSD with serious consequences including high divorce and suicide rates.
Sadly, many victims of PTSD simply try to “grin and bear it”. However, treatment is available and fairly effective.
The Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation and accident lawyers at the Schmidt-Salita Law Team have many years of experience in successfully bringing justice to the victims of PTSD and other types of injury resulting from car accidents, sexual assault, and other traumatic events.
