The Concussion Injury Lawyers at the Schmidt Salita Law Team want to share new concussion injury information with you.
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. However it is a mistake to assume that the mechanics of a mild traumatic brain injury, i.e. concussion are the same as those for a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury but only in a milder form.
Many moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries are mistakenly diagnosed as concussions. Both involve injury to brain cells. Moderate to severe concussions typically involve structural injury to the brain as well as cell injury.
Concussions can occur either from a direct blow to the head or by a blow to your body strong enough to cause your head to forcibly jerked backward and forward or to the side in a “whiplash” motion.
The human brain is made up of brain cells called neurons. Each neuron has an axon which allows it to reach out and connect with another neuron. Connections between the billions of neurons in the human brain create a complicated web of pathways in which the cells can communicate and interact with each other. These connections allow the brain to perform its many functions, including thinking, vision, speech, and processing emotion.
The type of brain movement which causes concussions damages the neurons of the brain, causing them to stretch and sometimes break-interfering with the connections between brain cells that allow the brain to function. This damage produces all of the symptoms of a concussion, the mental disorientation, the headaches, blurred vision, dizziness, and the rest.
The concussion effected brain needs more energy to heal and restore balance. However, a concussion reduces the brain’s ability to make and supply the energy needed for healing. The result is a double-whammy which plays out as reduced energy for the concussion victim.
It is generally recognized by concussion experts that repeat concussions are more damaging than the first.
The timing of the successive concussion is very significant. A repeat concussion occurring during the acute phase of injury from the earlier concussion can be hugely more damaging-even life threatening.
Even repeat concussions occurring after the acute healing stage of the earlier concussion are well known to cause increased brain damage. The Brain Injury Association of American tells us that the second concussion is 3 times more damaging and the third is 8 times worse.
Why are they more damaging? The exact medical/scientific explanation as to why repetitive, concussions cause increasing lead to greater disability is yet to be fully understood. Nevertheless, it is it fact. Even though a concussion victim may appear to have made a full recovery, she or he is left with an “invisible” damage that can interfere with the brain’s ability to call for the extra oxygen needed for recovery. This invisible damage can disrupt the healthy functioning of the autonomic nervous system and cause long-lasting concussion symptoms.
