The three major types of traumatic brain injuries are (1) open traumatic brain injuries (with a fracture or penetrating wound of the skull) and (2) closed head injury (traumatic brain injury without fracture or penetration of the skull).
The medical literature classifies TBIs in three categories: (1) Severe, (2) Moderate, and (3) Mild. It has been said by highly respected medical authorities that there is no such thing as a mild TBI- and that there is no such thing as “recovery” from a mild TBI.
A concussion is clearly a traumatic brain injury. Some authorities define a concussion as a “mild TBI”. Other authorities recognize that many concussions result in very significant permanent residuals and disability.
Without any doubt, car accidents are a leading cause of TBIs. The “whiplash” forces of a car accident can cause “acceleration/deceleration” forces that cause the brain to violently impact the inside surfaces of the brain, causing a TBI.
