Today, it was announced that the FDA has approved a new blood test that its manufacturer claims can prove the existence of a concussion. A spokesperson for the FDA predicted that the test could eliminate the need for CT scans in at least one-third of the cases of suspected brain injuries. The FDA approval was based on research that was financed by the US Department of Defense, which involved a 2000 person at clinical trial. The FDA claims that this brain trauma. Indicator will be able to predict the presence of inter-cranial lesions, causing brain damage in and 97.5% of the cases.
It is hoped that this is a blood test will help reduce costs significantly because scans of the brains typically cost between $800 and $1500. This test is predicted to cost closer to $150.
It is also predicted that the use of this blood test will significantly reduce patient exposure to radiation.
The preliminary research appears to indicate that this new blood test may be far more reliable in “ruling in” the existence of a concussion than it is in “ruling out” the existence of a concussion. In other words, it may be effective in proving the existence of a brain lesion in more serious cases where there is a major lesion of the brain and not so effective in ruling out the existence of a concussion injury, where there is not a major lesion.
