MINNEAPOLIS CAR ACCIDENT ATTORNEYS LAWYERS have 70 years experience, in over 10,000 cases, in handling injury cases arising from car accidents. Many of these cases have involved the victims of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious potentially disabling condition that can occur in people that have been involved in, or witnessed, a serious accident or other terrifying event. It’s a real illness. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares and episodes of severe anxiety where the victim “relives” and “re-experiences” the traumatic event.
Mayo Clinic describes PTSD as a mental health condition that is triggered or activated by a terrifying event, occurring to the victim or by witnessing the event occurring to another person. It lists the symptoms as including nightmares and flashbacks in which the victim “relives” the terrifying event. The symptoms include severe anxiety, severe emotional distress, distressing dreams or nightmares, sleep difficulty, difficulty with concentration, and avoidances.
PTSD can be a major health problem requiring medical and/or psychological treatment. Treatment can help in many cases. In many cases, treatment cannot bring about a complete recovery.
PTSD can be the result of physical injuries suffered in car accidents and workplace accidents.
PTSD can also be the result of a frightening event which did not involve physical injury. The Schmidt Salita Law Team recently settled a case involving PTSD in a workplace episode for over $400,000 where there was no significant physical injury.
PTSD and concussion injuries often occur from the same trauma, whether car accident, workplace injury, or other traumatic event. Many of the symptoms are common to both conditions.
Driving anxiety or driving phobia can result from the experience of a major car accident. Victims of this problem are often fearful of driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Many victims of this problem are more fearful of riding as a passenger because of the lack of control that a driver has. Many victims of a collision with a large commercial truck have anxiety when encountering the presence of a large commercial truck while driving or riding.
Often victims of PTSD have more difficulty in heavy traffic, or bad road conditions. Some experience a panic attack with symptoms of difficulty breathing, racing heart beats, muscular tightening, or sweating. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be helpful.
