MINNEAPOLIS PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENT ATTORNEYS at the Schmidt Salita Law Team have over 70 years of experience with injuries from car accidents. They know that whiplash injuries frequently result from car accidents, trucking collisions, motorcycle accidents, and any other type of motor vehicle collision.
Whiplash injuries result from abnormal extension (backward bending of the neck) and rebound flexion (forward bending). The exact opposite occurs in a head-on collision with flexion first and extension on the rebound.
Whiplash injuries can involve damage to the muscles, nerves, ligaments, intervertebral discs, and even the bones (vertebrae) of the neck and back when the flexion-extension forces take the body parts beyond their natural ability to bend, causing tears, hemorrhages, and fractures.
Whiplash forces can also cause major damage to the TMJ (tempo-mandibular joint) which is where the jaw attaches to the head, just in front of the ear.
The symptoms of TMJ injury include:
(1) Significant pain with all movements of the jaw;
(2) Muscle spasm;
(3) Difficulty chewing and opening and closing the mouth;
(4) Pain radiating into the head (headaches);
(5) Clicking and popping sounds in the jaw; and
(6) In more serious cases, the jaw will actually “lock up”.
TMJ injuries are very often overlooked in the Emergency Department, as attention is directed to more obvious injuries and frequently concealed by the use of pain medications and symptoms of shock.
There is no question that TMJ injuries can result in significant disability, both short-term and permanent. Just imagine how disrupting a person’s life is when they have pain with every movement of the jaw every time they try to chew.
The experienced and skilled personal injury lawyers at the Schmidt Salita Law Team at the Schmidt Law Firm have many years of experience in detecting TMJ injuries and getting their clients to medical providers who are experienced in diagnosing and treating TMJ injuries.
