Whiplash injuries to the head, neck and back result from car accidents, work injuries, and other traumatic events.
Car accident are a major cause of personal injury. Most car accidents happen when another car crashes into the rear of a slow-moving or stopped car. Most injury claims from car accidents are whiplash injuries coming from rear-end collisions.
In rear end collisions, the most injured person is in the car that got hit by the car from behind. That collisions causes the head and neck to be forcibly projected backwards and then forward. That is called a “flexion-extension” or an “acceleration-deceleration” injury. The forces of that type of injury can stretch the muscles, ligaments, nerves and intervertral discs beyond their natural ability. That causes strains of the muscles and sprains of the ligaments. It can also injure and damage the intervertebral disc that connects the vertebrae bones of the spine.
The same forces that injure the structures of the neck can also damage the brain. When the neck “whips” backwards and forwards, so does the brain. This can cause the brain to slam violently against the hard surface of the skull bone. That can cause both focal and diffuse brain injury. The result can be a concussion or a severe brain injury.
Recent studies have proven that concussion injuries can cause long-term disabilities just as bad as a moderate or severe brain injury. Many concussion injuries are not immediately diagnosed. Instead, the symptoms develop over the next several days or weeks after the collision. As the result, they are not often diagnosed in the emergency department of the hospital after the collision.
