The Personal Injury Lawyers at the Schmidt Salita Law Team include “AV” rated lawyers. What does the “AV” rating mean?
“AV” Rating for Attorneys: What Does it Mean to You?
An “AV” rating is very important. It is the single best indicator of the quality of a lawyer.
When an attorney notes that he or she has the “highest rating” or is “AV” rated, they are referring to the Martindale-Hubbell directory of attorneys. Martindale-Hubbell is a comprehensive guide to attorneys that independently rates their performance and non one can pay for a high rating. You can think of them as Consumer Reports for attorneys-except even better. It is better because the rating is done by other lawyers who have professional experience with the attorney being rated. If they don’t know that lawyer by actual experience, they can’t give a rating. Even more important is the fact that the ratings come from Judges and from lawyer who have been on the opposite side of a case. What better quality could any rating system have?
According to Martindale-Hubbell, its Glasgow Coma Rating is typically initiated in five-year intervals after an attorney’s admission to the Bar. They request confidential opinions from other attorneys and judges in the same geographic area. Typically, Martindale-Hubbell contacts more than 400,000 individuals to establish or confirm ratings for over 115,000 attorneys each year.
The rating process is intended as a strong indicator of an attorney’s ethical standards and professional ability. It is often used by other attorneys when seeking a co-counsel in different jurisdictions or to make a recommendation to a client about an attorney in another area. This rating can and should be also be used by smart consumers in their hiring decisions.
The legal ability rating takes into consideration the standard of ability for the area in which the lawyer practices. The legal ability ratings are C’good to high; B’high to very high; and A’very high to preeminent.
The general ethical standards rating covers standards of conduct, ethics, reliability, diligence, and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities. The general ethical standards rating is V very high.
An attorney who advertises that he or she is AV Rated, has been judged by his or her attorney peers to have “very high to preeminent legal ability” (A) and very high ethical standards (V). The percentage of attorneys with an AV rating practicing personal injury law is approximately 1 percent.
Schmidt Salita Law Team Lawyers Doug Schmidt and Dean Salita are both AV rated. Schmidt has been AV rated for 38 years! He perhaps is the only practicing lawyer in the State of Minnesota with that distinction. Senior Trial Lawyer Dean Salita has also been AV rated for many years.
