MOTORCYCLE INJURY LAWYER MINNEAPOLIS

Minneapolis Accident Lawyers know that winter driving conditions cause more accidents with more serious injuries and deaths.

The Personal Injury Lawyers at the Schmidt Salita Law Team offer the following safety tips for safer winter driving:

#1. STOPPING DISTANCE

Allow for greater stopping distances on ice and snow.  Icy road conditions can increase the stopping distance by a factor of 10 times.

A winter storm created dangerous driving conditions, including this crash involving at least 15 vehicles on northbound U.S. 131 between Burton and 28th Streets in Grand Rapids, Mich. One person was reported injured.

#2.  WINDSHIELDS AND HEADLIGHTS

Keep your automobile’s windshield and headlights clean.  Dirty windshields can severely reduce visibility.  Salt, dirt, ice, snow, and other dangerous road conditions can reduce the effectiveness of headlights by as much as 80%. Check your windshield wipers BEFORE the snow comes down. If they aren’t working effectively, purchase upgraded wipers.

#3.  WINTER TIRES

Use winter tires which can increase the stopping distance by 66%. Four-wheel drive alone may not protect you from crashes.

#4.  SLOW DOWN

The stopping distance of any motor vehicle is dependent on the speed at the time the braking maneuver is started. Begin slowing down in snow and sleet earlier than you would under normal weather conditions.

Bottom line:  Reduced speed + Good winter tires + Increased stopping distances + Clean and Clear Windshields and Headlights = Greater Safety!!!
