Prescription Errors Are a Major Problem.
Prescription and medication errors are common in general medicine as well as in hospitals and nursing homes. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, medication errors cause at least one death every day and injure approximately 1.3 million people annually in the U.S.
Statistics compiled by the World Health Organization show that medication and prescription errors result in the death of one person every day in the US and injure 1.3 million people every year.
A branch of Harvard Medical Institutions, CRICO Strategies, studied over 3000 medical malpractice claims involving prescription errors and concluded that 32% of the medication-related cases resulted in patient death. The three most common drugs in medication-related malpractice lawsuits were analgesics, anticoagulants, and antibiotics.
Prescription Errors Are a Personal and Business Problem.
A recent article in the Twin Cities Business magazine, August 2017, entitled “Getting Your Order Right Could Be a Matter of Life or Death”– employers should make medication safety a priority in their health benefit plans” discussed the problem. The author, David Burda, concluded that this problem was of such magnitude as to be of concern to Minnesota employers.
His statement was this:
A number of recent reports and research articles suggests that prescription medication errors – whether at the pharmacy, physician’s office or hospital – are more common than most of us believe. For employers who offer prescription drug benefits to their workers, the situation should be of concern. In the best- case scenario, you are paying for the wrong order. In the worst- case scenario you are paying to recruit a replacement for an employee who was injured or died from taking the wrong medication.
Burda noted and that a recent study indicated that only 30% of the hospitals in the study met all four of an employer-based safety advocacy group’s proper safety system’s safety criteria.
Prescription Errors Constitute Pharmacy Malpractice Under Minnesota Law.
Minnesota Medical Malpractice laws apply to all healthcare professionals. That includes licensed pharmacists. Pharmacy malpractice includes prescription errors of pharmacists. It also includes prescription errors of the pharmacist’s assistance over home. The pharmacists have supervisory responsibility.
