MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER-CONCUSSION INJURIES.

The MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER wants you to know these facts about concussion injuries:

-Every year, more than 1.5 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

-75% of the TBIs are concussion injuries (mild traumatic brain injuries).

-40% of the concussions are from car accidents and motor vehicle collisions, including motorcycle collisions, car-pedestrian collisions, and trucking collisions.

A “mild Traumatic Brain Injury” can result in serious long-term consequences that are not “mild” at all.   ‘The term “mild” in “mild traumatic brain injury” refers to the initial symptoms-not the final result.  A  “mild” TBI is one without a long period of loss of consciousness and without a skull fracture or obvious bleeding of the brain.  A “mild” TBI can, however, result in major long-term disability.  A recent study proved that 50% of concussion injury victims end up with long term cognitive disability ( reduced memory, comprehension, comprehension, multi-tasking abilities, etc).

-The large majority of the victims of concussion injuries either do not initially seek treatment or, if they do seek treatment, are overlooked by the medical community because the symptoms are not immediately apparent.  Instead, they typically develop over a period a days and weeks.

-Any concussion injury causes the victim to be at greater risk for yet another concussion-with greater severity.

MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER-OVERLOOKED CONCUSSION INJURIES.

Statistics show that over 50% of all concussion injuries are either overlooked or misdiagnosed.  There are many logical reasons for that-and some illogical.

-The symptoms of concussion injuries often are not apparent immediately or are overshadowed by physical injuries and shock.  Respected medical research shows that the symptoms of concussion injuries often develop slowly and progressively over a period of days and weeks.  That makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for emergency doctors to diagnose a concussion injury.

-Many victims of concussion injury do not seek medical attention at all.

-Diagnosis and treatment of a concussion injury are important and can reduce the long-term and permanent consequences.

MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER-CONCUSSION SCREENING.

The lawyers and legal assistants at the MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER know that many victims of concussion and mild traumatic brain injury “fly under the radar” of concussion screening.  Most do not get the screening that is required by Minnesota law to be given the potential victims of concussion injuries in youth sports.  See Minnesota Concussion Law at Minnesota Statutes 121A.38 at www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=121A.38.

The Schmidt Salita Law Team is trained to provide initial concussion screening using screening protocols recommended by the American Board of Neurology and commonly used in many of the specialty concussion clinics.  They are trained to detect the obvious signs of concussion injury that may have been overlooked previously.  They will recommend treatment by highly trained brain injury specialists in any of the brain injury specialty clinics in Minnesota.

Douglas Schmidt, the senior trial lawyer at the Schmidt Salita Law Team, has invested many hours of teaching Doctors of Chiropractic to implement concussion screening as an integral part of the intake of patients who have been injured in car accidents, other motor vehicle collisions, and workplace injuries.

MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER-POST TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY SCREENING.

The personnel of the Minnesota Brain Injury Law Center knows that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) occurs commonly in people with concussion injuries. Statistics show that 48% of the US soldiers that suffer from concussion injury are also diagnosed by PTSD.

PTSD is a condition in which people who have been involved in or experienced, a shocking, scary, or dangerous event.  PTSD victims suffer emotional symptoms of which can be flashbacks of the event, nightmares or bad dreams, frightening thoughts, panic attacks, avoidance of activities associated with the event, etc.  The American Board of Family Practice doctors have identified motor vehicle crashes as a major cause of PTSD.

The lawyers and legal assistants at the MINNESOTA BRAIN INJURY LAW CENTER are also trained to screen the victims of car accidents and other motor vehicle collisions for signs and symptoms of PTSD.  They are trained to refer those victims to trained professionals who are skilled in the assessment and treatment of PTSD.

WHIPLASH OF THE NECK AND WHIPLASH OF THE BRAIN OFTEN OCCUR TOGETHER.

The phenomenon of “whiplash” is typically associated with injuries to the neck and back caused by the sudden and forceful forward and backward “snap” of the neck. In the typical rear-end collision, the head goes backward first and then forward.  The brain inside the skull then is forcefully slammed into the front of the skull as the head goes back.  It is then forcefully slammed into the back of the skull as the head rebounds forward.  That movement is known in medical research as a “coup/contra coup”  force.  The same forces that cause a whiplash of the human spine also often cause a “whiplash of the brain”, namely a concussion injury to the brain.
