The WHIPLASH INJURY LAWYERS at the SCHMIDT SALITA LAW TEAM have, collectively, 100 years experience in representing the victims of personal injury was by motor vehicle collisions, car accidents, trucking accidents, motorcycle accidents, car pedestrian accidents, and car, bicycle accidents. They know that a significant percentage of these cases involve injuries to the neck and back, including whiplash injuries. They also involve concussion injuries which are “brain whiplash injuries”.
WHIPLASH INJURY RESULTS IN SUSTAINED IMPAIRMENTS
WHIPLASH INJURY CAUSES SERIOUS LONG-TERM DISABILITY.
It is well known in the medical and chiropractic community that whiplash injuries produce serious long-term disability.
The American Medical Association has declared that chronic neck and back pain is among the most common reason for people seeking medical attention, accounting for more than 70 million office visits to doctors every year. The AMA has declared that low back pain alone accounts for more disability than any other medical condition, resulting in nearly 150,000,000 lost workdays in 1988.
Neck and head injuries resulting from whiplash are also a leading cause of chronic pain and disability. Headaches resulting from neck injuries are recognized a “cervicogenic headaches”. Headaches also result from concussion injuries, known as post-concussion headaches. It is well known that migraine headeaches can be either caused or aggravated by a concussion injury. The AMA recognizes that headache disorders are a major cause of work loss.
A recent research paper authored by Krogh et al, (2018)examined the long term consequences from whiplash injury. The authors concluded that the long term disabilities resulting from whiplash are a major health problem. They stated,
“Whiplash injuries from car accidents can result in long- term disabilities in the individual, with resulting considerable societal costs. The after-effects of whiplash injury have been investigated extensively, but not much is known about the long-term effect of these injuries on neck muscle functioning, or the role that neck muscle function plays in the process of recovery after whiplash injuries. This paper provides evidence that: (i) some areas of neck muscle function are affected for at least one year after the injury; and (ii) whiplash-exposed individuals who recover (are able to return within one year to pre-injury work routines) present with much better neck muscle function than those who do not.”
“Half of those exposed to whiplash injuries will still report symptoms years after the injury and more than 20% will still not be considered recovered after 5 years.” These types of findings put the clinical focus on early diagnosis and management of long-term symptoms. The authors continued by showing, “It is evident that impaired cervical functioning after whiplash injuries is widespread and persistent, and its etiology may be multi-factorial across psychophysiological areas. It is likely that WADs, such as pain, neck stiffness and catastrophic thinking after injury, result in a behavior of muscular inactivity, which, in turn, leads to physiological degeneration and further pain and psychological impacts.”
WHIPLASH INJURIES CAUSE CONCUSSIONS AND TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES.
Is well known that the whiplash force resulting from motor vehicle collisions can cause significant long term injury and disability to the neck and back. Those same forces are well known to cause significant long-term injury and disability to the brain in the form of concussion injuries. “Whiplash of the brain” occurs when the brain is forcibly slammed against the hard surface of the skull. This often occurs without a direct blow to the head. Mayo Clinic says that 90% of the concussion injuries occur without a loss of consciousness and without a direct blow to the head.
MANY CONCUSSION INJURIES ARE OVERLOOKED.
Many concussion injuries are overlooked because the victims do not seek medical attention. Even those that seek medical attention are overlooked because the symptoms of concussion injuries often are not immediately apparent and do not develop until days later so that they cannot be diagnosed by medical providers who perform the assessment shortly after the injury.
