Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that commonly occurs after a person has been exposed to a traumatic event such as a car accident.  It can be a serious problem causing major long term and chronic disability.

Mayo Clinic defines PTSD as “a mental health condition that’s triggered by a terrifying event-either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.”

PTSD may start immediately after the exposure to the traumatic event-or after a delay of as much as a month.  It is not usual for a person who has been a bad car accident to a B “shook up” for several days after the accident.  When the symptoms worsen and continue to interfere with day-to-day functioning, a diagnosis of PTSD is appropriate.

PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.
