Large semi-trucks have "blind spots" where the driver's visibility of other vehicles is either limited or totally absent. One such blind spot is directly ahead where the engine compartment conceals objects directly ahead of the truck. Another blind spot is that of a car which is along side the truck and inside the scope of the rear-view mirror. For that reason, it is necessary for truck drivers to have special skill in the use of their mirrors and to be especially vigilant for other traffic, including cars, motorcycles and bicycles as they are approaching and may be entering the trucker’s blind spots. Most driver’s training courses for commercial truck drivers involve extensive training in the use of the rear-view and side view mirrors. Many large commercial trucks have several large mirrors, each with special features that allow for different.
"Blind spots" are a special hazard involved in truck driving and are the cause of many trucking accidents. The Schmidt Law Firm has handled many cases involving blind spots where the truck driver was unable to see another car or a bicycle.
A recent case handled by the Schmidt Law Firm involved a blind spot where the trucker did not see the bicyclist. This case involves a lady who was riding a bicycle through a cross walk in St. Paul when the driver of a large US Postal Service semi-truck decided to take a "right turn on a red light". The result was that the lady, who became a client of the Schmidt Law Firm, was struck and knocked over. She and her bicycle were pushed by the truck a distance of approximately 60 feet. It was a miracle that she was not killed.
In yet another case, a semi-truck didn’t see the small car as it switched lanes, crushing the small car between two semi-trucks.
In a case currently behind prosecuted, the truck driver lost sight of a car ahead that was partially hidden from view by the engine compartment of the truck.
The Schmidt Law Firm has a long and successful record, over 30 years, of prosecuting cases involving truck accidents.
